If you're experiencing pain in your shoulder or a lack of mobility, there's no need to panic. Depending on the diagnosis and the severity of the situation, you may be able to benefit from a surgical solution. Fortunately, we at Oklahoma Shoulder Center are specialists and experts in this field. You can count on Dr. Betsy Nolan, our shoulder and elbow specialist, to recommend the most appropriate method for providing you relief and allowing you to begin on the road to your shoulder feeling normal once again. Among the surgical services we provide with respect to the shoulder are repairs of rotator cuffs and shoulder arthroscopy.
The rotator cuff allows for a wide range of motion. It's a group of tendons that are part of your shoulder joint. When it becomes torn, which can happen from engaging in sports that require repeated use of your arm overhead (tennis for example), it typically leads to pain, weakness, swelling, loss of movement, and tenderness. You don't have to be an athlete to tear your rotator cuff, though. It can also occur from an accident. We can repair the tear with suture anchors, which will result in the tendons becoming reattached to the shoulder bone.
Shoulder arthroscopy is a procedure which is done with only a small incision, instead of open surgery. It can usually be done on an outpatient basis and is associated with quicker healing and recovery as well as less scarring. It may not be an option in every instance, but Dr. Nolan will discuss the possibility with you. Among the shoulder issues for which it is often used are torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder, stiffness, and arthritis of the end of the clavicle.
