Dr. Nolan and the Oklahoma Shoulder Center are pleased to announce the establishment of a Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
A fellowship is additional subspecialty training after a five year orthopaedic surgery residency training. The purpose of a Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship is to provide an Orthopaedic Surgeon with the opportunity to spend an additional year gaining a more comprehensive understanding of and experience in diagnosing and treating subspecialty problems. In our case, there will be an emphasis on disorders of the shoulder and elbow. The volume and breadth of experience allow the fellow to move past the early career learning curve before they start working independently and see and treat cases which might be rare in general practice to gain this additional expertise to benefit the community in which they will ultimately practice.
The Fellow will participate in clinical consultations, surgical procedures, office-based patient care, and research and teaching in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery.
In order to support the educational mission of the Fellowship and funding the research conducted by the fellow and the faculty, we have established a 503c non-profit entity called the Oklahoma Shoulder and Elbow Research Foundation (OSERF). Anyone, including grateful patients, supportive colleagues, educational foundations, professional organizations, related implant and other vendors, can make a donation to support OSERF. The Foundation has recently hired its first Executive Director and she will be working quickly to establish portals to make it easy for those interested to make those donations. Note that the Foundation is not directly to the practice, and any donations to OSERF would support the fellow’s salary, operational expenses of OSERF, and funding to complete and present research activities of the fellow and the 4 faculty members, but no portion of these donations goes to Dr. Nolan or the practice.
Speaking of faculty, Oklahoma Shoulder’s own Dr. Betsy Nolan will serve as Fellowship Director. Dr. Seth Boydstun, Dr. Michael Maxted, and Dr. Kevin Hargrove will also be co-faculty. These surgeons offer differing practice profiles, providing a breadth of experience where the Fellow will gain proficiency in treating sports-related shoulder and elbow injuries, acute shoulder and elbow trauma, and chronic conditions of the shoulder and elbow, utilizing open and arthroscopic surgical techniques.
We are working through the accreditation process through ASES (American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons) to be included in the San Francisco Match in the future, but in the meantime, if you are interested in applying, an independent application is necessary. The application will soon be available on our website. Interviews for the inaugural Fellow position will take place this fall and winter, with an anticipated Fellowship start date of August 1, 2023.
