This is the first year that the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Foundation is observing the event, which is celebrated September 20-26, 2021. The goal is to bring together healthcare professionals like surgeons and therapists with patients and community members, to connect and discuss advances in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. In person events are being held in Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Tampa, to raise awareness of and fundraise for advocacy for shoulder and elbow care and research.
Membership in ASES is a privilege and an honor. Only the most highly trained shoulder and elbow surgeons and researchers are considered for membership. Prospective members must meet strict academic and clinical requirements to become a member of ASES.
To be eligible for membership, a physician must have a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine, and must show a proven interest in and contribution to the field of shoulder or elbow surgery. This must be demonstrated in their medical background and practice, as well as through presentations at scientific meetings and publications in medical journals. They must have completed an additional year of subspecialty training after residency (called a fellowship) in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, or in certain sports medicine or hand fellowship programs where the faculty are ASES members and the fellows therefore receive substantial dedicated training in shoulder and elbow surgery.
You can find an ASES Member Surgeon on their website, at https://ases.memberclicks.net/find-a-surgeon#/. There are only three surgeons in Oklahoma who are currently members of any level, and Dr. Nolan is the only one classified as an Active Member, which has additional academic and practice experience requirements. In addition to other many local and national leadership roles, Dr. Nolan serves on the Education Committee within the ASES.
