A distinct honor to serve the orthopaedic surgery profession and our collective patients, Dr. Nolan was inducted as a new member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS) Board of Councilors (BOC) in March. It’s important that patients and local surgeons are represented in the AAOS and to our representatives in government, and that’s what the BOC does. The BOC consists of surgeon representatives from each state and Puerto Rico. The number of representatives depends on the size of the state. In Oklahoma, we are fortunate to have 2 representatives currently, which is one more than usual, because Dr. Wayne Johnson of Lawton was recently promoted to Secretary of the BOC. Next month, the entire Board of Councilors as well as the Board of Specialty Societies and the AAOS Board of Directors, will meet in Washington DC for the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference. This is a grass roots advocacy effort in which the leaders in orthopaedics meet with their state’s Senators and Congress(wo)men in person on Capitol Hill regarding issues of importance to orthopaedic surgeons and orthopaedic surgery patients.
